Fall HR Update

Virginia Tech is a hopping place right now as we push toward the last six weeks of a busy fall term.  Just as you are busy, there is a lot going on in the Department of Human Resources as well. This month's blog highlights a few of the main items on our agenda of general interest.  And introduces you to Bo…

Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC)
The CVC is in full swing and the generosity of the campus to date has been amazing.  We really do have a culture of giving here.  With six weeks to go in the CVC, we have already raised $172,000 toward our $300,000 goal.  You can fill out a paper form or give online.  Thanks to all who have given and all the many more employees who will contribute between now and Dec. 14.

November bonus
If you were employed by the state of Virginia on April 1, 2012, remain employed until at least Nov. 24, 2012, have no Standards of Conduct written notices if you are staff, a satisfactory evaluation if you are faculty, and at least a developing evaluation if you are staff, you will receive a 3% bonus on Nov. 30.  More information about the bonus is available online.

Virginia Tech is a hot employer
Did you know that we received 47,000 applications for employment between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012? That's 20,000 more applications for employment than we received just four years ago.  There's no question the word is out that Virginia Tech truly is a great place to work!

PeopleAdmin upgrade
The PeopleAdmin system is the centerpiece of our application process.  Virginia Tech successfully completed a major upgrade from PeopleAdmin 5.8 to PeopleAdmin 7.6 during the week of Oct.  22. The PeopleAdmin system is a software system which helps us keep our job descriptions up to date, posts our jobs, and accepts applications electronically from job candidates.

We continue to tweak the system based on comments we receive. All in all, the upgrade has been very successful and our users report that they like the "look and feel" of the new version of PeopleAdmin.  We very much appreciate your patience as we go through this transition. There is lots of great information online to help you get the most out of our new system.

Though the system requires an online application, did you know we assist walk-ins to our office who need help completing the application process?  We also offer applicant seminars to help local candidates use the system.

New executive director for equity and access
We are very pleased that Laura Rugless joined Human Resources on Oct. 22 as the new executive director of Equity and Access.  The following functions will report to her: ADA, Compliance and Conflict Resolution, Employee Relations (this is a new reporting unit), and Equity Initiatives.

Laura brings tremendous experience to her new role. Please see this article about Laura to learn more about her background. I know you will make her feel welcome to our wonderful community.

Thank you to our veterans
We are extremely proud of all the employees and students at Virginia Tech who served in the military.   Many of our students and employees are still serving our country through Reserve and National Guard units.  With Veterans Day approaching, please make a special point to recognize the veterans in the Virginia Tech community.

Bo knows HR
Though this may not truly be of general campus interest, I certainly think it should be.  The Irvin family is pleased to announce we are being allowed to "borrow" the dog of a friend of the family while the friend works abroad.  The dog, Bo, is in the process of adjusting to our two kittens.  He has taken "sitting up" to a whole new level and is a perfect gentleman in every respect. He is helping me with work-life balance already!

Bo and I wish you a happy and productive November!

Hal

  1. Increased job applications does not demonstrate that VT is a hot employer. With mass unemployment, sluggish economy, and 41 million on food stamps, logic suggests that large regional employers will experience increased applications.
